Prof. Luigia Sabbatini

Full professor at Department of Chemistry University of Bari “Aldo Moro”

Prof. Sabbatini graduated in Chemistry at University of Bari in 1974. From 1975 to 1980 she had a Fellowship from Ministry of University and Scientific Research, University of Bari, Italy. She was Researcher at Department of Chemistry of University of Bari from 1981 to 1986. She became Associate Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Department of Chemistry of University of Bari in 1986 and Full Professor of Analytical Chemistry in 1986. She was head of Chemistry Department of University of Bari from 2005 to 2010. For many years She is member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena and Annali di Chimica, at present member of the Advisory Board of Journal of Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry. Guest Editor of a special issue of Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry Journal devoted to investigations on the development and characterization of interfaces of biological interest,-President of the Interdipartimental Center of Research and Services in the field of Cultural Heritage Diagnostics, University of Bari (2005-2010). She coordinated many projects financed by Italian National Council of Research (CNR), Italian Ministery of University and Scientific Research. She was also Scientific Coordinator of the Project "Research Laboratory for the Diagnostics of Cultural Heritage" financed (€ 1.900.000) by EC and Italian Ministery of University and Scientific Research (February 2003-June 2005). Her research domains are the development and surface characterization of innovative inorganic and organic (polymeric and composites) materials for applications in microelectronics and sensors; the surface and interface investigation on material/biological system interactions aimed to enhancing biocompatibility and biomedical devices performance; the exploitation of non-destructive analytical methodologies in the field of Cultural Heritage. Her scientific production is attested by 144 full papers published,1 book and about 150 communications.

Prof. Gerardo Palazzo

Associated Professor at Department of Chemistry University of Bari “Aldo Moro”

Gerardo Palazzo graduated in Chemistry at University of Bari and obtained his PhD in “Applied Biochemistry and Chemistry” at University of Molise. In 1989-1990 he was invited scientist at Institut für Polymere - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) of Zürich (CH). In 1991 he joined the University of Bari where he is associate professor of Physical-Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry. Currently he is also the head of the degree courses (BS+MS) in Chemistry of the University of Bari. Since 2000 he has been coordinator of several research projects of the Bari University and of the Consorzio per lo Sviluppo dei Sistemi a Grande Interfase (CSGI-Florence). He was the group leader of the Bari Research Unit in the National Reasearch Projects PRIN2003, PRIN2005, PRIN2008. He has published more than 100 papers in international peer reviewed journals and books (for a list of recent ISI papers see his own home page). The main research activities of Gerardo Palazzo deal with biophysical chemistry of proteins and the characterization of membrane and complex fluids by means of physicochemical techniques (NMR, DLS, SAXS, SANS, etc.)

Assistant Professor and “Professore Aggregato” (e.g. Aggregate Professor) at the Chemistry Department of the University of Bari

Nicola Cioffi research interests are in the field of nanomaterials for the life sciences, including: sensors (gas- & vapour-sensors, biosensors), bio-analysis, mass spectrometry & proteomics research, antibacterial/bioactive nanomaterials, catalysts for green chemistry, etc. Moreover, N.C. has a 10-year experience in the synthesis and analytical characterization of metal nanoparticles, polymers and nanostructured hybrid materials. The scientific production of Nicola Cioffi is documented by 4 invited seminars, 6 book chapters, 76 papers and 2 editorials on peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, 3 European patents, 9 extended abstracts and 132 communications presented at national and international conferences. N.C.’s h (Hirsch) index is 18 (ISI Web of KnowledgeSM, v 4.10).

Antonia Mallardi studied Biological Sciences at the University of Bari, where she obtained her doctoral degree in Medical Biology and Biochemistry . 1990 - 1991: CNR Research fellow at Department of Membrane Biochemistry of Max-Planck Institut fur Biochemie (Martinsried). 1993 - 1994: Post doctoral fellow at Chemistry Department of University of Bari. 1994 - to present: Researcher at the Institute for Chemical and Physical Processes (IPCF), Bari division, of the National Council of Research (CNR). She is author of more than 50 papers in international peer reviewed journals and books. The main research activities of Antonia Mallardi deal with the functionality of proteins, focused on membrane proteins, and protein assembling in supramolecular architectures for biosensing.
